Huisduinen

The lovely village with history

Huisduinen is a lovely and quiet village by the sea, located in the municipality of Den Helder. Young and old will not easily get bored here with the spacious beach, the sea and the dike within walking distance. There is also a beautiful dune area, a very popular place for runners and walkers, among others.

The rich history of Huisduinen

Huisduinen has a rich history. Fort Kijkduin, dating from 1811, is part of the Stelling Den Helder and is one of the oldest remaining military defence lines in the Netherlands. The Stelling Den Helder was built under Napoleon and many forts can be visited today.

Discover the rich history of Huisduinen from the time of Napoleon at Fort Kijkduin. Visit the powder magazine and see various cannons from around 1850 or wander around the old corridors of the fort. Admire the most beautiful fish in the North Sea Aquarium, located in the fort, and walk underwater through a twelve-metre-long glass tunnel!

The Atlantikwall Centre in Huisduinen tells the story of the Atlantic Wall in the Wadden Sea area in Den Helder. Den Helder and its surroundings suffered greatly during the Second World War. Discover what a German soldier did, listen to stories from the inhabitants of Den Helder and learn why the Atlantic Wall was built.

In 1866, another eye-catching structure was built: the lighthouse. The lighthouse, called De Lange Jaap, is 63.75 metres high, making it the tallest working lighthouse in the Netherlands.

Beautiful location

Huisduinen is beautifully situated, offering plenty of fun for water sports enthusiasts. The beach is regularly visited by windsurfers, kite surfers and wave surfers. With our sea breeze, there is almost always an opportunity to fly a kite. Huisduinen has a quiet, clean family beach. Don't be surprised if you see seals here, curiously watching the people on the beach with their heads above water. The village is small but charming, with a few eateries and restaurants.

In Huisduinen, you can also visit the Tesselaar care farm, which offers daytime activities for people with intellectual disabilities and/or mental health issues. Feel free to take a look at the cowsheds, pet the retired horses and ponies, and visit the petting zoo. You can also buy homemade products such as cheese, fresh honey, and sheep's wool slippers.

There are also numerous opportunities for cyclists and walkers. You can create your own cycle route via the cycle junction network or follow an existing route. CAN Holiday Homes also offers a bicycle rental service. We will deliver your rental bicycles to your accommodation and collect them again!
